To Earthward By Robert Frost Essays - Aesthetics, Poetic Form

To Earthward By Robert Frost English IV AP February 2000 To Earthward Robert Frost's To Earthward is an intimate lyric in which an old man reflects upon his passionate experiences with love as a youth and the lack of such experiences in his old age. Through diction, imagery and structure, the tone of the speaker changes from one of gentle nostalgia to resentment toward the ephemeral nature of love. The entire poem, which consists of eight quatrains, adheres to a structure of six syllables in the first three lines of a quatrain and four syllables in the last line. Also throughout the colloquial piece are external rhymes, which are sometimes imperfect, but are used to keep the steady rhythm. This use of diction and structure makes the poem seem more universal. The speaker's situation is one that we all will experience someday. Alliteration is for emphasize in bitter bark/ And burning clove (23-24) and stiff and sore and scarred (25). The alliteration of harsh B and blunt S sounds accentuate the speaker's discontent with the dispassionate state of his current way of life. In the first four quatrains the speaker is reminiscing about his experiences with love in his youth. He recalls how little it took to enchant him and that love at the lips was touch/ as sweet as I could bear (1-2) for in his youth love had seemed extremely intense. Vivid descriptions create a vibrant and fragrant image of his early love as a musk/ From hidden grapevine springs/ Downhill at dusk (6-8) that made him feel as though he would swirl and ache/ From sprays of honeysuckle/ That when they're gathered shake/ Dew on the knuckle (9-12). But the image of a rose petal that stings in lines 15-16 begins the speaker's diversion toward resentment. He implies that the joyful aspects of love are so intense because of the pain and tension that accompany love. Now that he is old, the speaker feels the need to live passionately before he dies. He no longer fears the pain that accompanies love because he desperately longs for the intense love he experienced as a youth. He crave(s) the stain/ Of tears, the aftermark/ Of almost too much love (21-22) because he did not appreciate the transient nature of love until too late in his life. He is left to pound on the ground (his future resting-place), resentful that his longing for love will never be as intense as the experience of love itself. Poetry and Poets

The detective genre Essays

The detective genre Essays The detective genre Essay The detective genre Essay His most famous feature is his intelligence, which he demonstrates very modestly. He always presents his deductions with an air of understatement: There is no mystery, my dear madam. As Holmes listens to Helen Stoners story in The Speckled Band, the same quiet confidence and ability to encourage and reassure in very few words is apparent. He talks very little compared to his visitor, but has the ability to listen completely attentively to every detail of her description, Leaning back in his chair with his eyes closed Sherlock Holmes tends to have a great deal of concentration and imagination as he questions Helen Stoner and contemplates the situation, as he has a fair idea of the real events of the story before he leaves his room. The detective work is done within his mind and his visit to the scene of the crime is really only to confirm what he has already deduced. Sherlock Holmes is a hard working, observant character, unlike the police, the public had lost faith in the police and it was down to Doyle to make Sherlock Holmes a detective who could actually continuously unravel clues, solve crimes and build public hope. The other great appeal of the compilation of stories is that the modern reader sees a real historical period of living, which has now passed by. As readers like to see life in olden days, Doyle represents this brilliantly in his stories. In The Speckled Band there is the reference to the dogcart in which Victorians travelled around in, to the attire of Helen Stoner when she visits Holmes. She raised her veil as she spoke and we could see that she was indeed in a pitiable state of agitation, her face all drawn and gray, with restless, frightened eyes, like those of some hunted animal. Her features and figure were those of a woman of thirty, but her hair was shot with premature gray, and her expression was weary and haggard. The reference to the veil shows the audience that something as gone wrong, as people only tend to wear veils either if your getting married or if someone has died as its tradition to wear such garments.

What to Say When a Job Interviewer Asks You Who Are You Voting For

What to Say When a Job Interviewer Asks You Who Are You Voting For As we near Election Day, in what many people believe is one of the most controversial elections in recent memory, political discussion  is undoubtedly going to make it’s way into your workplace- causing some very heated political debates. But what do you do when it  enters your job interview? It’s common knowledge that you should probably not talk  to new acquaintances about politics, religion, or sex. These topics, especially politics, can be very flammable. But what if a hiring manager begins to discuss their favorite candidate and asks you who you’re voting for?In this scenario, it’s best to be prepared. Here are three routes you can take to keep yourself out of hot water.Offer a Noncommittal ResponseMaybe  tell the interviewer that the entire discussion has so much controversy, you’ve chosen to stand on the sidelines and not get involved. This signals to the interviewer that you do not feel comfortable answering his/her question, and the conversation will most likely end it there. If not, you may want to consider a different employer.Keep it LightheartedYou can also take the route of humor and diplomacy. Some options include:â€Å"I plead the fifth.†Ã¢â‚¬Å"I’d back anyone in favor of world peace, but that’s probably not happening for a while.†Ã¢â‚¬ I think if the candidates stop attacking each other, we’d all have a better understanding of their policies. Until then, I’m not entirely sure.†Change the ConversationSometimes the best way to respond is to simply transition away from the topic. The less talk about politics, the better. You can even use it as an opportunity to showcase who you look up to.â€Å"This election has been a challenging one for so many reasons. But one issue that has stood out is the issue of leadership. Professionally, I’m always looking for leaders who do X and Y.†Ã¢â‚¬Å"This election is filled with so much polarity, which is the opposite of what I love about so many companies that emphasize team building and working together. How much does your company emphasize this?†Try a Neutral ResponseIf your interviewer goes on about how much they like a certain candidate, you can give them neutral acknowledgement. This will steer the conversation back on track, and you’ll be able to discover more about the company’s management and leadership. Simple body language, like a couple of nods, would suffice. Alternatively, you can try some of these options:â€Å"I can see what you mean†¦Ã¢â‚¬ Ã¢â‚¬Å"I hadn’t pictured it that way†¦Ã¢â‚¬ Ã¢â‚¬Å"Hmm.. interesting†¦Ã¢â‚¬ Your ideal strategy is to steer the conversation to business and the job interview at hand. If the interviewer seems determined to continue the political conversation, take this as an opportunity to evaluate their emotional intelligence. Are they ranting? Angry? Do they challenge you unnecessarily? All of these fact ors may give you an idea as to your compatibility with that workplace.Your best approach is to remain professional, calm, and diplomatic. Pay attention to the reaction you get as you try to shift gears. This will tell you everything you need to know about whether the company is right for you.Source: [Business Insider]Image Source: [CBS News]

Systems and Operations Management Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words - 1

Systems and Operations Management - Essay Example The main importance of such strategies is to ensure that the relationship with customers is enhanced in order to improve the processes of sales and marketing. Nonetheless, the lack of or presence of internet security is likely to be a major topic of discussion among different countries as well as in a large number of corporations (Peng, 2008). Part One: Option 4 Summary of the text; Achieving Operational Excellence and Customer Intimacy Technology has been extensively applied in transforming the shape of marketing as is used in different organizations. However, with the development and implementation of these advanced technologies a number of changes are experienced within the operational functions of the business. There is thus need to safeguard and protect the information systems, data as well as other information technologies. In this chapter, the major processes associated with advanced technology in the form of online and internet use of the computer is highlighted. The number o f challenges is depicted to be related to Facebook whose users are warned to watch out. In relation to this, there have been a number of reported cases related to theft and presence of malicious software. These are associated with spam, malware as well as other serious security issues. With time, several destructive elements have been introduced into these systems. Similarly to the other viruses circulating within the computer system, these areas were faced with the introduction of Koobface worm in December 2008, the 18 month hacker scam for passwords, which resulted in the entry of the Trojan horse. It is as a result of this that financial data was stolen around the year 2009. The other main challenge was the emails that were created in May 2010 with an intention of stealing logins (Laudon & Laudon, 2013). In comparison to other online tools such as e-mails social sites and especially Facebook is shown as the main target that is used by hackers. It has been related to a high gullib ility level of the users. This is despite the high security measures that have been placed by its dedicated team to include up-to-date measures. The hackers thus make use of â€Å"social engineering† malicious software to develop the attacks aimed at the consumers. As such, it is indicated that there main activities include the theft of passwords and data as well as using botnets. As Laudon and Laudon indicate, it is because of this that different organizations are faced with the task of constantly developing advanced security policies. This is done through the people who include stakeholders within the organization. With this, the organization and specifically its management are presented with the duty to deploy a serious security team to ensure that security is always maintained. These have to be achieved through the application of current technological advancements. They may include the implementation of the website security system, technology that is able to authenticate and security technologies that are applied on an individual basis (2013). The most appropriate way to attain this is through the identification of most of the malicious codes normally used, to identify the different sources of spam and to protect user data. All this is stated as the effort towards responding while making use of the information systems and operations. As such, these steps enhance the action towards providing a number of business solutions since

When Darkness Struck Essay Example for Free

When Darkness Struck Essay It was past your curfew late one night and you were on your way home. While you were in the lift with a neighbour, it came to a complete halt suddenly. Based on the above information, write a composition of about 150 words. In your composition, make use of the points below: †¢ How did you feel? †¢ What did your neighbour do? †¢ What happened in the end? You may reorder the points. You may also include other relevant points. I looked at my watch. Oh no! It was 10 pm and it was way past my curfew. I sighed. Who cares? I have to work overtime. ‘Ok, everyone you may pack up for the day. Sorry to hold you guys in,’ said the boss. My heart rejoiced. Finally, peace and freedom! I took the public bus home to my flat. I walked briskly towards the lift lobby as I pressed the lift button. Mr Chan, my next-door neighbour, was waiting for the lift, too. We smiled at each other. ‘Working overtime again?’ he asked. I nodded. The lift door opened. We walked into the lift together. While the lift was moving up, it suddenly halted, the lights went out, the entire lift went pitch dark. Fear crept onto me as I felt my way to Mr Chan and asked,’ What should we do?’ ‘Don’t worry, I will try possible ways for help,’ Mr Chan replied as he felt for the emergency button and pressed it. To our dismay, it did not work due to the blackout. Next, Mr Chan tried the second attempt. He felt around his pocket to look for his mobile phone. With that, he dialed to the engineer rescuers. A few minutes later, the lift door cracked open. I could saw the glimpse of light outside. I thanked Mr Chan and the rescuers for their help. Mr Chan and I walked home together, then we split into different routes to our doors respectively. I could see Mr Chan’s wife, Mrs Chan, standing by the front door, waiting for him anxiously. On the other hand, my mother was waiting for me. When she saw me, she asked, ‘Where did you go? I was about to call to your office venue!’ ‘There was a blackout in the lift.  Luckily Mr Chan was with me, or I would still be stuck in the lift by now,’ I replied. This reassured my mother, as we walked into our house, getting ready for the night. I saw a piece of paper on the coffee table. It was written to me by Mrs Chan. It said: Dear Carine, There’s a curfew today from 10pm onwards. Residents are not to use the lift, for they might encounter problems such as blackouts. I would like to remind you so that you could tell your boss about the curfew at your estate when you reached your working venue so that he can release you earlier. Your neighbour, Mrs Chan I was about to sleep for the night after changing my clothes when I heard ‘Carine, Mrs Chan left you a note this morning. Have you seen it?’ I sighed, with a smile on my face. There goes my mother again, who only tells people after they have seen it.

Poverty in Australia Essay examples -- Poverty Essays

Poverty in Australia Before discussing the extent of poverty in Australia, it is first crucial to mention the difference between absolute poverty and relative poverty. Absolute Poverty is a situation where deprivation is extreme because people do not have access to the basic necessities such as food, clothing, and shelter. In contrast Relative Poverty is a situation in which the incidence of poverty is measured relative to things such as average weekly earnings or income per head. Therefore poverty, as talked about in Australia is the state where income is insufficient to meet the minimum needs of the household or individual. The Poverty Line is the level of income below which the income of the household or individual is inadequate to meet the essential needs of the household or individual as determined by society. The Poverty line is determined by a percentage of average weekly earnings. In 1966, the original poverty line for Australia, was set by Professor Henderson as basic wage plus the child endowment payable for two children. There is a definite lack of recent data on poverty in Australia, therefore we have to look back as far as reports from the 1970’s, in order to find any relevant information on poverty in Australia. In 1975 there was a report made on the extent of poverty in Australia by Professor Henderson. It has since been known as the Henderson Report. The Henderson Report found that 8.5 per cent of Australians were living under the poverty line. It also found that: â€Å"Most of the poor suffer from one or more of the following disabilities: old age, lack of a male bread-winner, a large number of dependant children, recent migration to Australia, or prolonged illness. The incidence of poverty was much higher in these categories than among those without any of these disabilities.†(Henderson 1975) At the time of this report average weekly earnings in Australia were $165 per week, the poverty line for a single person was set at $49.60 for a single person, and $93.20 for a couple w ith 2 children. (Jackson, McIver 1998) A report similar to the Henderson report was carried out in 1987, where the poverty line, still using the original method used in 1966, had been raised to $146 per week for a single, and $274 per week for a couple with two children. (Jackson, McIver 1998) Although the poverty line had risen due to economic grow... ... every fortnight without fail, and without the hassles of having to go to work every morning. Whilst the Australian Welfare System is not perfect it does without question assist in its main objective which is reducing inequality of incomes, and therefore the level of poverty. Although there is no current data on the amount of Australians living under the poverty line, and it is very difficult to estimate, it appears likely that using Professor Henderson’s original method, the increasing inequality in the distribution of household incomes has caused the percentage of Australians living below the poverty line to increased substantially.
