Human Trafficking in China Essay - 2237 Words

Human trafficking is prevalent throughout the world, especially in Asia and more specifically in China but the government and non-governmental organizations (NGO) are taking measures to put an end to it. Human trafficking involves exploitation of human beings; either sexually or by coercing them to work in unfavourable conditions for little pay or nothing at all. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) defines human trafficking as â€Å"the acquisition of people by improper means such as force, fraud or deception, with the aim of exploiting them.† Women and children, especially girls between the ages of fourteen and twenty constitute the majority of victims of human trafficking. â€Å"China is a source, transit and destination country†¦show more content†¦And this is the source of human trafficking; gullible, poverty stricken ethnic Chinese people. To prove this, United Nations Inter-Agency Project on Human Trafficking (UNIAP) reckoned â€Å"the number of female migrants is also rising rapidly, most of whom are young girls aged 17-25† (www.no-trafficking.org). â€Å"China is a transit country for trafficked victims destined to Thailand and Malaysia for commercial sexual exploitation, forced marriage, illegal adoption, begging, and forced labor† (www. Humantrafficking.org). Where China is located in Asia makes it inevitable for traffickers to transit there with their victims. Traffickers travelling down from Mongolia, North Korea to Southern Asia make stops in China. More often than not, China is a final destination for trafficked people. â€Å"Most women and girls are trafficked from North Korea, Vietnam, Russia, and Burma. This is because there is a higher population of women than men in these countries relative to the destined countries, like China. As you know, a lot of Chinese mothers have been aborting their female foetuses for a while now because the country and society has shown preference to male children. As a result, there are less female youths than males in China. China is at the forefront when it comes to countries whose men who solicit young girls for sexual purposes and pay for brides from female populous countries like Vietnam and Burma.
